You could argue it's a bug, though a bug that only happens when you switch out hardware without rebooting the device is stretching the definition a bit.

I agree that iPads and primary schools don't mix. I let my kids use my iPad under supervision, but wouldn't just hand one over to be carried around and taken home with them. My experience is with the college level, and for that it's great and intuitive. Even before iBooks2.0.
