Depends how many are on the ship — older ships would sometimes have four, two forward, two aft (think Kidd, Spurance class destroyers.) No idea what the compliment is these days (Arleigh Burke and beyond.)

Go RTFM on the 320si, something I recently discovered in my move to the EU from the US.

I thought the 540 and M5 had the same type of VANOS setup; dual VANOS (one for intake, one for exhaust, per bank.) Both engines have the same leaky valve cover gaskets. Both cars have crappy upper suspension mounts and problematic power steering. Same headaches, IMHO; I'd go with the M5.

Does the Allroad plastic body cladding count?

Absolutely. They are scary, but there are coilover replacement kits and aftermarket airbags that are more resilient of you want to keep the ride-height adjustments.

A story worth telling. Gary Lee (RIP) was still upset about these events and commented "what a waste" in discussing Lanier and other drivers who wound up involved in more nefarious schemes over the years.
