As someone whose mother recently got a terrible diagnosis, and who now does nearly all the work plus my job, I'd take all the burden in the world for her to keep being alive and with me (not to the point if she couldn't do anything and just lay there but we're not there). I think in the end it's about a society that teaches you that having someone is all that matters. So out of fear of not having anyone they'll keep it going. My ex is with a woman like that, that he keeps lying, cheated multiple times etc doesn't stop her.
