I agree. What gives? I believe the rating system is there not only to try* restricting video game purchasing to certain age groups, but it's there to serve as concrete evidence when concerns rise towards violent games, it's there to be enforced when needed.

A Ratings System that has done little if not nothing to change the opinion of Non-Gamers. You never hear anyone ask in the media say, Why did that parent buy an M rated game for his child? That's alright, there actually hasn't been any news on Sims 4 past the initial announcement that it was happening (and the accompanying note on always-online) and a teaser logo. Take the screenshots on NeoGAF with a grain of salt and you'll be as caught up as everyone else. :)
