A hotas for Elite isn’t necessary, the flight model isn't that complex.  I actually have one that I use for DCS World but I use my plain ol’ xbox controller for this.

It’s great, I also took a long abscense and was delighted at the small but impressive improvements to the sounds and sights of the game. Radio chatter, UI improvements and better spaceport design were added much later after release, but it shows long term commitment and improves immersion
