A hotas for Elite isn’t necessary, the flight model isn't that complex.  I actually have one that I use for DCS World but I use my plain ol’ xbox controller for this.

It’s great, I also took a long abscense and was delighted at the small but impressive improvements to the sounds and sights of the game. Radio chatter, UI improvements and better spaceport design were added much later after release, but it shows long term commitment and improves immersion

As far as content, most of it is in the area around us but there are activities and bases as far out as the Pleiades and right outside of Sagittarius A*
