Exactly. If songwriters were excellent musicians or vocalists, they’d be performing their own work. We’re supposed to pretend the performance isn’t important in order to maintain the illusion that a woman of color is being unfairly enriched by doing something few people can do as well as she can?

Whitney wrote none of her songs. Diana wrote none of her songs. Aretha wrote few of her songs. Barbra wrote few of her songs. Ella, Sarah, Dinah, Dusty: none wrote their songs. Being a great singer/performer is more than enough.

Beyonce is a top tier entertainer and a brilliant businesswoman. and she has the receipts and rep to prove it. What she is NOT is a top tier singer, and I wish tone-deaf people would quit claiming she some sort of vocal savant.

Bey has very little involvement in the creation of her music. Sia said to Rolling Stone that Bey hires the top songwriters and the top producers and makes them all share a house while they create Bey’s music for her. Sia used the word “Frankenstein” to describe the process.

I’m not a huge Beyoncé fan (she wasn’t my favorite in Destiny’s Child and she isn’t my favorite Knowles) but she is certainly as or more deserving than anyone else in the top 5.
