Depends on how you look at it - the gov’t is “paying” through the foregone earnings that otherwise they would have collected from the buyer ($7500.)  But I get the distinction, and the fact that they don’t have to “pay” as much for someone without that much tax liability.

I don’t even know why it is tied to one’s tax obligation - people’s tax situations vary wildly. It should be lopped off the purchase price directly. Fan goodwill can/should only go so far. I’m seeing a lot of FSD detractors among Tesla owners, it’s hardly the uniform “weird Tesla fans” that Apu meme has people believe. If this was Musk’s intention, I hope he does less cringy SNL monologues and more “running a business.”

Tesla has a self-calibration feature you can use after a windshield replacement. I’d like to see that propogate across different companies as technology increases.
