I have done this a couple times (for legendaries) myself, and it is the most awful timesink imaginable. Resetting your DS hundreds of times a day, for months...Sucks. In regard to the older hardware it depends really. I tend to avoid collecting if I can resist it. The only portable console that I have collected prior to the 3DS is the gameboy pocket (I collect the clear variants in particular).
