Sword of Mana deserves a mention because it's a remake of the first game in the series that was called "Final Fantasy Adventure" in the US and "Mystic Quest" (yes! really!) in Europe. It was my first exposure to anything Square, and anything Mana.

That is a tautology. You aren't really defining anything.

Uniqueness is not just in the premise or visuals (some guy only LOOKS like an old guy, but he doesnt really behave like one). I agree Robo from Chrono Trigger actually was written in a way where he did deal with the issues of "robot-ness".

Still, while I agree with you on a purely visual term, the characterization and personalities are what matters more than the visual representation. And Bravely Default so far hasn't disappointed me in that.

I don't know, of course it wasn't like the original Tactics, but as a kind of "you wake up in a storybook" kind of story, it had its own charm, really. I enjoyed it a lot.

The concept you mention are rather cliché too. If any of those characters actually were there, the same argument you threw at the beginning would still apply: "another Robot? Chrono Trigger ripoff!" "Another old Dude! FF5 ripoff!".

The demo doesn't really show anything about their personality and background stories though. I don't think these nuances can really be shown in a demo.
