When the US or any of its affiliated corporations even whispers something contrary to the advancement of women Jezebel engages their DEFCON protocols and goes all in. The barbarian kingdom of Saudi Arabia freaks out because a woman was shown out of a veil and we talk about all the progress their making. Cultural

Hey, at least she's done her hair to look just like a hijab.

Not to Godwin, but... guns, blue eyes, and blonde hair?

Come join 13-year-old Brenna Strong along with her mom, Bea, and her dad, Richard

Uh, is anyone else noticing that the man in the picture has an actual gun for a hand?

I grew up in this city and have been to this restaurant a few times. If I had to throw out some descriptors, I'd say liberal, hippie, lots of vegan and veg options and staffed entirely by what I'd call hipsters and artists. I genuinely believe this woman wanted to honor people who took time to appreciate their food

I grew up in Winston and attended WFU. It's a shame you're painting with a broad brush due to some article by someone who has never been to the city. Perhaps encourage your daughter to get to know the city herself before making promises about darkening doorsteps. Hope she has a great experience in Winston, though.

I feel sorry for your daughter. She'll be missing out on one of the most diverse, inclusive, and interesting restaurants in town. Not to mention the best brunch. I encourage her to experience it for herself before making decisions based on the misguided opinions of those who have never darkened its doors.

Thank you! You're spot on. First article to compel me to comment. It couldn't be more wrong about Mary.

Those grits. That vegetarian gravy. It's the first thing on my list every time I go back to visit home.

I'm a longtime Winston-Salem resident and have been going to Mary's for years - since it was known as Mary's of Course, Breakfast of Course, and its current iteration Mary's Gourmet Diner. Mary has the best brunch in town, hands down. It may surprise you to know that Mary's isn't really a diner. It's actually a

I'm from W-S, and your description is spot on! I hate seeing people assuming the worst about Mary and the restaurant when in reality it's the exact opposite of what most people are picturing.

Oh, Salem College. They seemed so irrelevant when I was in college, but honestly, some of the nicest girls I ever met in Winston went to Salem.

Well, I grew up there and now live outside Raleigh! I was at home all last week! Love that Thai place you named, and the Basil Leaf which is across from the Wynnsong movie theater. I want some of their pad thai right now! I usually go to the Greensboro farmer's market, but next weekend I'm at home I should probably

Oh my God, are you in Winston, too? Also, YES to great Thai—especially Thai Sawatdee in the Harris Teeter! Have you been to the farmer's market in Old Salem this summer? They've had some damned good food.

It really isn't a college town in the way that Chapel Hill, NC, is a college town. Boone, NC is a college town. That's like saying Asheville is a college town. Yeah, there are universities in the city, but students are not the primary source of population.

Actually I used to live in WS and this restaurant (and it's former iteration Mary's of Course) were excellent. There were always long waits on weekends.

My husband is athiest and I am borderline myself. We did not mention god or religion in our wedding at all. We went to school in Winston Salem and Mary graciously catered our wedding. Her place is one of the only local restaurants that caters to vegetarians and vegans, but she also makes some yummy meat options. Mary
