There’s only been one great film version of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, and that was Evita. The director of Evita, Alan Parker died this weekend. RIP Alan Parker.

ALL of television owes Kathy Griffin the biggest apology and most generous comeback deal in history.
I caught that! So, I’ve achieved tinseltown gauge status? Nice to know. Thank you dahling.
Exactly- and it’s happened before: the same scenario befell Rosie O’Donnell. She maintained the “queen of nice” reputation for quite a few years during her afternoon talk show heyday; was similarly lauded for her mainstream success as an out lesbian and mother who conquered a huge audience (and truly had a terrific…
Yes it is, which renders this a non story, but God forbid Jezebel should go one day without a story about reality show people (even - as in this case- where there is no story at all). Breaking news: Jerry-Netherland will not be going to Geneva or Madrid this week, either, no matter how much he may want to.
Favorite Wilford Brimley performance? “In & Out” - a standout performance in an all-star cast as the husband of Debbie Reynolds and supportive father of Kevin Kline.
That certainly is damning. However it doesn’t absolve Warner Bros (who, presumably turned a blind eye to their cash cow all these years) from stepping in. Clearly they’ve been complicit by never stepping in to stop this madness. So, evidently she’s been as complicit as they say, and that’s sad.
Fair point. Oprah, however, is sui generis in this arena because she owned her own show - and the studio. Thus, she wasn’t subject to the same studio/network chain of command. Arguably, Ellen could have - by now, certainly - emulated Oprah’s trajectory, bought out her partners, purchased a stand alone studio facility…
This is still a great movie - and it wn’t hard to see the subtle lesbian subtext. It’s hardly like 1992 was so lonng ago. We all saw it.
Hey, Maria. Tuesday afternoon I had to run to the pharmacy. I jumped in my car and the radio (as it always is) was on KPCC (LA’s NPR station), and halfway through a conversation with YOU about your new book. I wanted to sit and listen more because you were so charming, charismatic and poised that the discussion was a…
Sounds like a drive-thru update to the old Automat (as seen in That Touch of Mink, wherein Doris Day would get whatever she wanted from her roommate, Automat employee Audrey Meadows)
Tilda Swinton is a good call. I’ve said for years that Richard Gere should play Epstein (he’s got the look and the chops to play it). And now that Ron Silver is dead, the best choice for Dershowitz is Jeffrey Tambor. (For every reason)
They sidled up to him for years because most of them (unscrupulous bankers, drug addled socialites, slumlords, etc., all the Hamptons’ “finest") knew they were likely to need his services. They cut him loose once it was clear he would no longer even be useful for their inevitable criminal defense needs.
Sorry, but this ignores some long standing Hollywood truths:
Gee, Alan, THIS is a “reversal of fortune!”
If only they voted as much as they tweet.
It would’ve been awful had the second quarter GDP fallen just 9.5%. It actually fell a hitherto unfathomable 32.9%.
Mr Ed was a stable genius.
Now THAT’S how you get a star from uncle Jerry!
