Do Plavix and Lipitor count?

The curator had a sense of humor - s/he also included an Elsa Schiaparelli shoe hat!

Some years ago LACMA had a shoe design exhibit and Mae’s double deckers were in it (equally towering were several pairs of Carmen Miranda’s famous platforms - and she danced in those things!)

Now playing

First and foremost, Kelly, you look lovely.

Yes.

Her “jailtime” for “corrupting the morals of youth” was - as it might be today - a promotional goldmine. She had created a play called The Drag (featuring a gay storyline, cast, and a full on drag ball finale). This was an out of town hit, but wasn’t permitted to be presented on Broadway. Meanwhile, her other show

Here’s a very unusual piece that must be seen by any old Hollywood fan. It’s called “When Bette Met Mae” (2014). Trust me, everyone, this is unlike anything you’ve ever seen: the audio is authentic documentary, and the visual is performed. (All explained within). And it only runs about an hour (you'll wish there were

One day, those stories - about the people in and connected to my family - will be told. (But hell if I’m gonna just give ‘em away around here!)

So the Chevy Impala moved to Bavaria and got a butt lift?

Hey, Goddess. Check out the threads on the post about Mae West. I dropped a few of the signature J-N stories you enjoy this morning.

Indeed. My childhood was split between NYC and LA, and health food (frankly, all food) in NY back then was far behind the quality of what was going on in LA. In the mid 70s, the health food store near our home in Brooklyn was as you describe (it could well have been selling dirty books), whereas in LA, the health food

I gotta tell you, I am one of the few people who actually saw Sextette on screen - at the premier*! A few friends and I ducked out of school for the spectacle at the Cinerama Dome. Mae was practically wheeled out on a dolly to be vertical for her entrance (I’m certain film must exist of this somewhere). Sextette

I used to use this graphic in my comments everytime his name came up on Gawker:

The Mae v Raqui standoff is legendary, and I’ve heard Raquel’s stories first hand. But nowadays, she’s tempered those stories to acknowledge that Mae was likely very scared (returning to the screen after decades), so put on the full Mae bravado and made all the absurd contractual demands because she needed to believe

She was never a “catty bitch”; she was litigious - but because she was fiercly protective of her image and her writing (she wrote all her own dialogue for 50 years), and would sue impersonators if they stepped on her copyrighted material without paying royalties (which were expensive). It was pure business.

She was also a famously astute investor. Her Los Angeles real estate investments were as legendary as her unparalleled writing.

Oh. So imagine how bad health food was ten years earlier! (Defying all odds, I turn 58 this weekend)

OMG. Wheat germ sprinkled over everything (like grilled meat!?) and Tigers Milk carob bars as a “snack". Just horrifying. (We must be the exact same age)

Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court?

It’s ridiculous to lay Kate’s burdensome extra workload on Meghan. Meghan’s only been in the family two years, and much of that time was while pregnant and then on maternity leave. Isn’t the bigger problem that Kate and William are getting saddled with all the duties from which Andrew has been dismissed?
