Something like this? I drove one with tandem two speed axles. You could shift them independently to effectively create a mid gear with the inter-axle differential averaging out the difference.

I have different terminology in my head. To me the pull knob in front was a range shift and there was a kind of switch on the top of the shift knob that was the split.

I’d check your state law. At least in Texas your allowed to run red lights if your on a motorcycle and there’s no other traffic, for that exact reason.
