It has more to do with who is paying for it. If the Saudis come in with a C-5 full of cash and ask us to build them an airplane, we’re going to do it. That money helps offset development cost for capabilities also used by the US, and we’d rather know exactly what they’re getting.

Maybe the part where this was 100% human factors and not the aircraft. The only criticism of the aircraft in this was that it didn’t do enough to prevent the people involved from screwing up.

For some reason I had it in my head that the deck issues were primarily a landing concern because vertical take offs will be extremely rare. Might be less of an issue if they could go to rolling landings, but I don’t know what that does for management of the deck space on a flat top gator.
