Another benefit to an old-school antenna on a truck is it gives you a sacrificial, non-painted low-clearance indicator.  In the case of a parking garage or drive through, if the antenna doesn’t hit anything you’re good to go.

Your story about the radio reminded me of crackheads prying Ford OEM stereos out of cars years ago. They were designed to be removed with two U-shaped tools that slid into holes to release the clips.
