I have to say I like the retcon they did in Death and Rebirth, and Rebuild where the computer targeting system broke after Ramiel’s counter attack and Shinji had to manually aim the rifle for the second shot. It made the entire sequence way more intense.

Exactly. That he died “early” or had little back story has never been the true issue. Also the comparisons to the low amount of back ground info on the emperor are misdirected/dishonest as well.

Funny enough though, both Phantom and Attack used significantly less CGI than Revenge. Hell the Camino wide shots which people swear is 100% CG is almost all practical. Adam Savage actually help build and paint the model with Tori Belleci of Mythbusters.
