Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon... a beautiful book of fiction about the science of cryptology.

My wife and I watched the original pilot a couple of years ago, and we were actually SHOCKED that it held up as well as it did. Not all of the early episodes are so good, but Dr. Who began with a pretty solid premise, and it's held up— essentially for my entire life!

Summer Glau, not unlike D.B. Sweeney, is the kiss of death for genre shows... once she's appeared, the show is almost sure to be cancelled. I think the exception occurred when she showed up on the train in that Big Bang Theory episode.
