I have a comment elsewhere agreeing. Many manufacturers, of many different types of consumer goods, just aren’t selling less expensive things any more.

It’s far more complicated than “it breaks down in x months”. If properly stored in an air tight container, gasoline can last a LONG time. It WILL lose anti-knock characteristics over a short period, months to years, but even after a decade of being properly stored, fuel will still combust and allow an engine to run.…
