The ATS isnt quite a German quality (interior-wise) car. But it’s a long stride up from a PT Cruiser. They also aren’t going to blow you away in speed but they are decently quick and are known for their chassis. Here is one in your area for 2k under your budget and with under 20,000 miles (!?): https://detroit.craigsli…
Yes. It’s for style, they didn’t want to sell a frumpy leaf or bolt, it’s a TESLA. Wheel manufacturing techniques have improved a lot in the last 10 years though, it’s possible their 19s are only a few lbs heavier than some 17s would be.
Not one person here, including you - would have missed that lady walking in front of you with no reflectors in a black sweatshirt across 3 lanes of traffic in the middle of the night.
Every single person in this thread would have hit her, with their car. No rational person in the world would think, “If someone sees me…
Ok, so the based on the video, it looks like the headlights didn’t illuminate her until about 3 nanoseconds before the time of impact. No chance any human could have brakes/swerved in time.
Well I suspect people are gonna crucify the driver, but I bet anybody would space out after riding around for an hour or two without touching the controls.
...How? She’s basically invisible until she’s within 20ft of a car on a 45MPH road. There’s no way in hell it’s stopping in time, and I’m not sure if it’s able to “panic swerve” around her in time.
But that’s the thing: yes, the driver should have been paying attention, but the car should have been able to see her first. Which it did not.
And I have to say, while she didn’t “dart out” into the road, she was wearing black with no lights or reflectors on a dark stretch of highway. I think that the driver (operator?) should have been paying more attention but I’m not sure it would have done much good. You can watch the video, and it’s almost impossible to…
I can’t stand Uber as a company. That said, I agree. People are begging for this to be Uber’s fault even though the data isn’t fully in yet. They’re “asking questions” but only the questions that might blame Uber for the situation.
And yet, people are “read” wrong every day. People have their signal on to turn but never end up taking it. People look like they are going to wait at a crosswalk, but then dart across last second. People will look right at you as they change lanes, yet they don’t see you.
Focusing on whether Herzberg stepped in front of the car sidesteps key, arguably more important questions that’s likely the focus of investigators: Why didn’t Uber’s technology catch Herzberg before it was too late and slow down? And why didn’t the safety operator at the wheel respond in time?
We have an absurd amount of pedestrian fatalities here in the Phoenix metro area. The link below is to a story from March 13 about the previous week and the 10 pedestrian deaths that had occurred. In 2016 Arizona was 3rd in pedestrian deaths and in 2017 it was 1st. For some reason this narrative is left out of the…
That’s the issue. Was it possible to avoid the pedestrian without defying the laws of physics? Ask anyone who has hit a deer if they saw it coming or could have in any way avoided it.
Breaking news, stepping off of a heavily planted median, into the left lane, in front of an SUV going 45mph, on a four lane divided highway, at 10pm, is still a fatal mistake, even with autonomous vehicles. Not to be callous, but hopefully this doesn’t slow down autonomous vehicles’ arrival. This was clearly, in no…
She was clearly jaywalking on a multi-lane road. And she was an adult, let’s not play the kid game. And you don’t need a degree to know that jaywalking will eventually get you killed. Would you jaywalk onto a highway? No, because you know you will get killed. What’s different in jaywalking on regular street?
This will be a setback in consumer confidence. The news of this accident came out before any conclusions were drawn. We do know a few things for sure: The pedestrian was jaywalking, walking her bike across the street, and the backup driver claims “It happened like a flash”. This also happened on a street with a 45mph…
“but on the flip side, how many pedestrians were hit yesterday by people driving their own cars?”
Of course, as a % of vehicles on the road, the stats instantly look worse for self-driving vehicles now than for those driven by humans. That’s a bit of a statistical anomaly, though - similar to how the gun lobby wants us…
