The reason they put the nuclear reactor on was so one of these at high altitudes could be on point at a moments notice. The theory was to fly these over the artic for days-weeks with multiple crews on board never having to touch down to refuel. That was the original purpose of it.
And yes... that's a B29 super fortress sitting next to it... the sheer scale of this plane is mind boggling
