I am not American - I never compared Ireland to America.
I don't think anyone is holding America up as a bastion of equality, least of all me. I'm comparing Ireland to countries where women aren't considered second class citizens and the USA does not qualify.
Perhaps from your point of view it's gender equal, but as an outsider who lived in the country for three years I was never so appalled at attitudes towards women and the role of women in society. It wasn't the only reason I'm glad to have left, but it was a BIG reason.
