Agreed. I'm no fan of Amazon's business practices, but if you're going to get Prime anyway, the Fire phone might be worth getting just for the apps it can run—a kind of Amazon iPod touch. Or get an inexpensive, per-minute plan from T-Mobile and it'd be an excellent way to equip a child with an emergency phone for

Not stupid at all. There are some interesting psychological studies that show that many people who’re insane can nevertheless explain quite well what a normal person would do in their situation.

Take advice from someone who scores about 98% on psychological tests for objectivity, whatever advantages it has can be negated if you don’t realize that others don’t see things as you do. If you’re dealing with someone who’s highly subjective, you’ve got to take that into account. Reasons that make sense to you may

When people remodel, they often change their ceiling fan, so thrift stores often have quality models for a fraction of retail. I recently picked up a top model, indoor/outdoor one for $15.

The easy fix is to learn not to do embarrassing things. That, after all, is why your brain is causing you to be embarrassed in the first place.

I read paper books under dim, 1-watt red LED, sometimes followed by listening to audiobooks in the dark.

Oh, I feel for you. It must be hard to live with that 'giant sucking sound' as it takes money out of pockets of hard-working people across the country and puts it into the pockets of government drones in that richer-than-everyone else beltway around D.C.

Don't be too quick to blame. Dry cleaners can point, with some justification, to the fact that women's blouses are more complicated (frills etc) and less standard that men's dull and similar dress shirts. That means they take more time.

Increasingly, feminism seems intent on demonstrating that every negative stereotype of women is true, that they’re fickle, moody, and easily slighted, among other faults.

Visit eateries and see if they'll let you have some of the 2-3 gallon rectangular plastic containers they get various foods and condiments in. The containers seal air-tight and are thick enough to be rodent-proof. I use mine for steel-cut oats, bought in 50# lots and split into about 2 1/2 containers.

Before you buy one of these sets, you might want to read the extensive discussion in the Amazon comments on this glassware about how the meaning of Pyrex has changed. These may not be the marvelous Pyrex dishes that your mother enjoyed.

For feather pillows, I find it often helps to manually pull the clumps of feathers apart and place the pillow out in the sun on a hot day. Cheaper than a dryer and probably—given all the fresh air and UV light—more effective.

This reminds me of the pleasure paradox, which Wikipedia defines as:

Lifehacker might want to cover a similar topic—web sites that enable us to monitor used book prices from multiple sources and get notified when there's a good deal.

Some thrift stores mark down clothes if they haven't sold after a month. Especially if you're looking for clothing out of season—i.e. winter coats in the summer—you can often score a fabulous deal. One summer I picked up a ruggedized Gore Tex jacket intended for EMTs for only $1.29.

Google did. More auto-plays mean more captive eyeballs and thus more ad income for Google. That's the flip side of getting all that streaming video for free.

One useful tip: Keep a mental list of items you need but not just now. Then you'll be prepared when you see it on sale or at a thrift store at a great price.

Ah yes, some retail firms are getting very big on recycling—suspiciously so.

Keep in mind that some items are most disposable than others. When I made a cross-country move in 2013, some items I placed out on the street didn't have takers. But when I put a set of book shelves out, they disappeared within minutes. Those are popular.
