Yeah, unfortunately each medical specialty has their own consensus guidelines. In addition to ACOG/USPSTF having different guidelines, the American Cancer Society ~also~ has different recommendations. ACOG says 40, ACS says 45, USPSTF says 50.
i read some pap smears at work. Many doctors are indeed just utterly random about doing paps and hpv testing, usually by doing one or the other too frequently. however they also often do only a pap (should be both tests) in patients over 30.
Part of the issue is ACOG did not change the guidelines for OBGYNs on mammograms right away. They in fact fought those changes, but then hedged in 2017 and said “Ok, every 1-2 years”. So a PCP may follow USPSTF guidelines and insist on biennial, but many OBs will use their guidelines and offer annually...it’s a mess.
