Jack gave Kevin the necklace when Kevin was in the hospital. Also, I think Jack’s burning note + Kevin’s present day guilt over needing to make amends with his father mean this is how Jack actually bites it.

He did not meet his son for the first time 16 days ago. He was involved with his son regularly until he was blocked from seeing him when he was 3, in part it sounds like because he was disputing that the child was sick and the judge(s) didn’t believe him.
