I used to buy monkfish filets that I think came from the Cheasapeak Bay. I’d grill them with pecan wood chips for a smoky flavor and drizzle them with a homemade pecan bbq sauce. Now I live in northern Virginia and miss all the wonderful seafood we used to get when we lived in Virginia Beach.
Have you ever had monkfish? A breaded slab of it would be instantly distinguishable from any other fish I can think of; it's texturally much more like a crustacean than a fish, ain't no way you're getting it mixed up with a nicely flaky hunk of cod or pollock.
Monkfish is delicious, isn’t overfished nearly as badly as a lot of other fishes, and is relatively cheap. They don’t come from Asia and nobody is counterfeiting them as far as I know due to fairly low demand and uniqueness.
Which is funny because lobster used to be the poor man’s lobster.

Monkfish is one of my all time favorite fish, but I hardly ever see it for sale in California. I’d choose it in a second over most other firm flesh/meaty fish that’s so “prized” and overpriced like halibut, swordfish or mahi mahi.
