I see your point on the comment being creepy, but the person isn't(or be label as so), and I agree. But the first thing out of your mouth shouldn't be "Are you married?" or be part of the conversation.

Like I said, a compliment that compliments their effort that they put on their costume not how they look. I am not implying that you can't talk to them, but don't go in the conversation expecting more, and use pick up lines(they heard them all).

That would be fine if you are going downtown to the bars or clubs to meet, and flirt. But at a convention is more to have fun, and for people to enjoy themselves. Not really to get hit on (regardless of how they are dressed), and *speed dating is available at large conventions.

A compliment would be "Hey nice [insert character] costume, how long did it take you to make it?" = /
