I think the unfortunate truth is that people who are used to having been bullied for their tastes often end up thinking that's standard behaviour on how to relate to people, and end up being the exact same kind of bully.

wow shit, Mojara's Mask is underrated? who doesn't like it besides the brain damaged and sociopathic? It's basically one of the best games ever made. Your point that people scrutinise women protags more isn't wrong, but I'd suggest it's less overt sexism against women in games and more a reaction to how badly they tend to be written, or marginalised, or exist purely as a plot device, etc. People are understandably bored of replaying these tropes.

It's a context thing again. Resident Evil and Dead Space are supposed to be gore-lead horror games. And Resident Evil 4 had Ada Wong who got her lion's share of nasty murders. Don't think anyone had a problem with it there.
