They did find him. Rudy Guede confessed and there was physical evidence connecting him to the crime. It's his crazy story about satanism that dragged Knox and Solecito into the case.

The "real" killer was convicted and is now in prison. The prosecutor however is convinced that Knox was involved, hence the retrial.

I think the issue is not that people are forgetting Meredith (at least in the US) so much is that Amanda Knox is also a victim, and she's the victim that's living and breathing, you know?
