It was a pretty generic movie with a very generic name that felt very safe and very unsurprising. I enjoyed it at least more than I thought I would after all the iffy headlines. This movie could have easily hit on all the same points and NOT have been a horrible retcon.

It’s not at all. It’s a middle finger to everyone else, in a way. It’s at the very least fan-service for their sakes. You didn’t like Rose? She’s gone. You didn’t like the parentage answer? They lied to you. You didn’t like change of any sort? Everything’s the same again. I actually thought the movie was entertaining…

True. But in placating them it kinda created something as bad or worse than what they didn’t like so I do kinda feel like jokes still on them.

I half heartedly thought the opening crawl would just be JJ’s diary entry for what he would have done instead for Episode VIII. He ended up using the whole film for that.
