Officer of the deck explicitly stated IN THE FILM that the Resistance ships were smaller and faster. There was LITERALLY dialog explaining this.
It was explicitly stated that the FO cruisers could keep pace but not catch up. It was said out loud. Maybe you missed that.
Because of reasons the writers could waste time making up but I’d rather they spent that time not catering to people who don’t know how to suspend their disbelief while watching a movie about space wizards with laser swords.
