Nah, you're just wearing nostalgia goggles. Just like today, there are bad many bad anime in the past, you just don't remember them. And there are loads of good anime today too.

If I'm not wrong, the DS version contains an extra case file (which is pretty damn long) that is not in the GBA or iOS version. So yeah, the DS version is the definitive version.

I admit, the first four episodes were info dump. It was pretty much explaining the setting. But the plot itself wasn't convoluted. It was pretty much "save the girl, save the world", very straight forward.
