The Marcus x Anya relationship was clearly visible in Gears 1. Go watch the sections with them both in the scene, look at the way the look at each other, then listen to their conversations. Gears 2 continued this.

Except Star Fox 64 3D probably only uses a tenth of the format capacity of a 3DS card, so those videos (could easily be pictures) wouldn't be supplanting any content. In this games case, anyway.
I think a comparison to Trine would be more apt than Shadow Complex. Trine had a focus on these sorts of physics puzzles, where as Shadow Complex was a much more action oriented affair.
