They haven't but that's a pretty good idea, actually. External fuel tanks work pretty well and there is room on the rear sponsons aft, as long as the tanks are designed to not interfere with mobility.

Not any time soon. The cost of an engine replacement has repeatedly been ruled out as too expensive for the relatively modest gains in fuel efficiency.
