401k plans are universally terrible because the mutual funds available in them have unbelievably high fees that eat all the returns. Buy some low-fee ETFs and you will actually get some returns instead of handing them over to the incompetent fund managers.

Well, practical experience (my ex-employer's 401K) has shown that positive returns aren't to be had. Thankfully, I got the option to pull it out and just stick it in a retirement savings account that at least gets me a couple of percent every year.
