Not quite, Gary's Mod is (funnily enough) a gamemod that converts source games into a sandbox which can be used to make stop motion machinima while SFM is a dedicated film program that uses game elements and animations.

Soemthing similar to this is what killed Spore. They released parts exclusivly through a promotion in America ans split the community. Then again since I quit after that maybe it was something else that killed it.
