Part of my experimentation toward a better green bean casserole involved a similar tac. However, crunchy green beans in a thick sauce was a little gross. The canned fried onions are a totally different beast then your standard burger-grade ones and are necessary to break through the mushy blandness. 

You do have to mix some of the onions with the bean-sauce mixture. And a couple dashes of Worchestershire sauce. 

These aren’t just pan-fried onions though - they’re deep fried somehow, so they’re crunchy and (wrongly) delicious. Very hard to replicate at home, mostly because doing your own deep frying in your own kitchen is  literally a hot mess.
