But presumably her 4 children are not dead and she would like to provide for them after she is gone. They would not be entitled to another penny of her winnings if she takes the annuity option, whereas if she takes the lump sum and then hires a lawyer who can spell his own name, she can draft a will leaving the money…

The problem with this strategy is that if you die, no one can claim the remainder of your winnings and if something comes up, you don't have access to the money if you need it.
