The so-called Prime Universe still exists. The new movies are just in a different timeline, whereas DISCOVERY is set in the original timeline. I assume this show will be set in the old timeline as well.
Both co-exist these days.

Most recently, as in the last decade or so, Detective Chimp was hanging with the Shadowpact, a team of occult heroes.
Because . . . bats are spooky? :)
Yeah, I love how Diana was written in this. They had her voice just right. Firm, polite, but always speaking her mind and treating everyone with respect and dignity.
“Kirk, I may need you to be more threatening now.”
Really enjoyed this. I’ve always had a soft spot for the spookier corners of the DCU.
Looks like they’re bringing the fun again!
You know, if EVERY superhero show was paced like C&D, I’d be squirming impatiently, too. But there’s enough comic-book shows out there these days that I can accept that C&D moves at a different rhythm than, say, SUPERGIRL or AGENTS OF SHIELD. It has its own weird, moody vibe that works for me. If nothing else, it…
But “the Dad” is the star of the show, which is unusual for a CW show.
Judging from this thread, there seems to be some confusion as to what constitutes the “lead character.” To be clear, the protagonist’s sister, or daughter, or sidekick is NOT the lead character. That would be the protagonist.
I’ll grant that White Canary is a borderline case here. LEGENDS doesn’t really have a single…
Good point. Then again, BLACK LIGHTNING does not feature a twenty-something lead.
One is tempted to mention XENA, but the show always had to maintain a (thin) veneer of plausible deniability there. Apparently the proposed reboot was planning to be more up front about the Xena/Gabrielle thing, but, alas, it died in development.
I actually saw her at a convention two weeks ago. She’d be great.
Not genre, exactly, but pleased to see that Sandra Oh got a nom for KILLING EVE, which is my favorite new show.
I believe THE PACK was based on a novel, or maybe there was a novelization of the movie? In any event, I remember the book if not the movie!
In terms of early influences, we should also acknowledge The Scarlet Pimpernel, which pretty much invented the whole Clark/Lois/Superman secret-identity triangle.
“Oh, Percy, if only you were as brave and dashing as The Scarlet Pimpernel!”
Zorro is basically The Scarlet Pimpernel in Old California.
We really, really need to rename that planet.
Where I’m coming from: I see fans today saying, for real, things like “Cumberbatch can’t play Dr. Strange; he already played Khan,” and I just don’t get it. This flies in the face of the entire history of movies—and live theater as well.
An actor is only allowed one high-profile role in any given genre? So John Wayne…
Speaking of sequels, TCM recently did an entire month airing old movie series from the 1930s and 40s, many of which ran for years: Charlie Chan, Bulldog Drummond, the Saint, the Falcon, the Thin Man, Mister Moto, Mexican Spitfire, Torchy Blaine, Maisie, Blondie, Tarzan, Jungle Jim, Bomba, Nancy Drew, Ma and Pa Kettle,…
Yep! Heck, Lucy Lawless had played at least two other roles on HERCULES before being cast as Xena, while Karl Urban played both Cupid AND Julius Caesar. Gina Torres played a couple of different characters as well.
This is where the audience’s willing suspension of disbelief comes into play.
Honestly, this is nothing new. Old-time movie and TV series tended to recycle the same actors all the time. Just go back and watch the original STAR TREK, THE MAN FROM UNCLE, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, etc., or even the more modern TREK shows. (How many different characters did Mark Lenard or James Cromwell or Suzie…
