Theresa May is basically real life Dolores Umbridge. I’m not saying in this case her actions were right or wrong, but she does seem to take pleasure in passing down acts that she knows will cause annoyance or upset. Just thought I’d provide some context for any Jezzies unfamiliar with her.

There is a weird glee that people get from dragging out bad opinions people had in their younger, dumber days. Like, I was extremely “problematic,” as they say, as a youth, but thank God I didn’t have a twitter account to write all my dumbshit opinions about women or whatever. Then I grew up! And it’s fine! I

I’m growing more and more uncomfortable with the seemingly increasing progressive notion that people’s backgrounds must be fully delved into and punishment doled out for things they did years and years ago, retroactive, permanent punishment. It strikes me as so anti-liberal.

“Like, y’all wasn’t trippin on that in 2011, or 2012, or 2013, or 2014, or half of 2015. But out of nowhere, the UK has a problem with me coming into their country?”

No. In France it’s somewhat illegal, in Spain it’s not. Guess what happen near the border ? More and more women complain of the poor piss attitude of the men treating them like shit. Why ? Because for a twenty they can have three ways with a poor womam (who had no choice). It’s damaging psychologically. They are not

Oh my God I want to hug you. I am an actual ugly person, and constantly getting hit with this sort of double-edged sword is freaking *exhausting.* I have to face the fact that I live as an ugly person in a society that values physical beauty every day, but having any kind of discussion about it makes me shallow, vain,

Women will be forced to it if they make it legal but the police will have a harder time deciding when and who to investigate. The women I know where rescued because prostitution is illegal. If it had been legal the police would have a harder time justifying that there is the need to investigate some prostitution

You hit the nail on the head, honey. I’ve had to trade sex for survival - not tuition - survival. Privileged little white girls (and some privileged little black girls, too) think it’s edgy and hip to claim “sex work is just like any other work”. Um, I don’t know - I can think of a difference or two without trying

It’s because I am fucking frustrated by Jezebel, these days. It’s changed. It’s like there is a wilful objective to try to appeal to a greater demographic, or something. It is most definitely dumbed down from its no-so-long-ago glory days... once it was political and smart... and bitingly funny. now it’s torso-gazing

If any man wrote a review of a film, and included a juicy bon mot about the leading lady’s tits, the feminist media and commentariat would (rightly) tear him a new asshole.

I give this an A for intention, but a D for execution. Nice little notes in obvious areas meant to boost self esteem, which is generally lagging in adolescent girls, is a good thing. Completely covering the mirror with Bible verses as affirmation was not the best way to go about this. I even say this as a Christian:

To be fair, the kind of mentality you list is the mentality they are fighting against. They are on your side concerning how ridiculous female beauty culture is.

Yeah I was “whatever” until I read it was plastered in Jesus verses. Ugh.

But the legal remedies being suggested treat the victims of trafficking as sex workers. The vast majority of women in the sex trade are victims of trafficking and/or coercion. That is the complicated part. The women who are in the sex trade purely by choice are a minority, and a privileged one.

Exactly! I feel like many Jez readers are white and priviledged and they have this idea that all sex work is empowering and those of us who are worried about women who are coerced or trafficked are “hysterical” like te author said. Well, I am Mexican and an immigrant and most women I know who did sex work were coerced

Or if you don’t like giving blowjobs. Remember that article? I don’t like the focus on men feminism has taken, but I deal because I think third wave positives outweigh the negatives.

I’m really torn about this issue. On the one hand, I have friends who have been sex workers. They have been white, middle class women who chose to get into it to make a few extra dollars, to make an income when they lost their jobs, to put themselves through school, etc. Some of them had good experiences, some of them

How about we make higher education free or at least somewhat affordable so people have the option of getting it without having to do sex work?

I’m all for legalization, but I don’t fool myself that it will solve many of the problems faced by sex workers. In areas where prostitution is legal, there’s still a very active underground sex trade because for many, the appeal isn’t just hiring a sex worker, it’s doing something illegal and illicit.
