Being a chemist, I am at least somewhat aware of mercury toxicity. And while you are correct in pointing out that other forms of mercury can be more toxic and bioavailable, children are more vulnerable to damage than adults.
LOL we're in the same boat. The syphilis comment was a nod to the standard treatment before antibiotics, which was small doses of mercury. It's not clear whether this treatment actually worked.
My favorite Creepy Crawler was the skeleton. The mold made several pieces that had to be joined together. It was awesome when made with the glow-in-the-dark Goop.
If the ball was solid, it might have been steel. If it was liquid, then it was "quicksilver" (elemental mercury). So if you ate it, definitely not good because it is a neurotoxin. But look on the bright side —- it might have cured your syphilis!
I think your point is absolutely valid. However, I guess I also feel that in an age of "Harry Potter" and "Catching Fire" and the Magician's Trilogy and "Divergent" and "The Maze Runner" and so on, labels become rather unimportant (that is, if the book hits the target and is given appropriate support by the publisher).
