I wish that stars were still available for articles, because this would get mine. Thank you.

But race and gender are such a tiny part of what makes up a character.

I think you made yourself quite clear in your first statement. Being disappointed that the protagonist from a prequel won’t be replayable is not the same as saying that you were disappointed because the protagonist in a sequel was a PoC. Especially when you go on to proclaim that you prefer to play as white male

This gave me LIFE!!!

Ashley Graham (like the plus size model)...

I have questions about #20. But yes, Dame Helen Mirren is a snack and Billy Porter rocked that gown. Loved the clip floating around of Glenn Close gapping in awe over it and her butt was in 42 pounds of beads

Dude killed it. Period.

He should walk onto every Red Carpet with a giant Neon sign that reads:

Let me get this straight, you just admitted that playing a game as a protagonist who isn’t white and male made you disappointed in the game despite the fact that 90+% of the protagonists in games are white and male yet you have no problem telling everyone else to shut up about wanting to play games with protagonists

I’m happy that he’s speaking up, sad that we had to wait for someone of a certain level of celebrity (and maleness) to co-sign.

My mom was a guest at a professor’s house. A fellow guest was determined once she saw black faces in her midst to hear an authentic negro spiritual. She excitedly asked my mom if she knew any “chants”. My mom could barely contain herself. From laughing. She replied “Gregorian ones”. My mom was raised Catholic.

but to assault individual games seems counterproductive”

You know what, I am just gonna say what we ARE all thinking here people!  I DO like a Pat Benatar ditty!  And I am not ashamed.

Who is out there stopping developers from making the games they think will sell? Since when has criticism ever stopped EA from shoveling out trash? What planet do you live on?

When both of those games came out with black protaganists for their second entries, I’ll admit, i was a little disappointed! I prefer playing as white men. But at the same time I do think it was great to see diversity in games. I just didn’t buy either of them.

I love the Watchdogs series and the Prototype series. When both of those games came out with black protaganists for their second entries, I’ll admit, i was a little disappointed! I prefer playing as white men. But at the same time I do think it was great to see diversity in games. I just didn’t buy either of them.

Gita, thanks for doing all you do. As a black #90skid who’s been playing games his whole life, I was obviously aware of the lack of representation in the titles I played but I got conditioned to believe, well, that’s just how it is. Hell, the highest-profile black character back then was Barret Wallace, and as

A couple of things to consider (this ended up being a longer post than I thought it would; I know, a long-winded Arnheim post—shocking):

1.) Most people don’t understand that argument—at least in the academic sense—is an intellectual exercise as often as it’s intended to actually shift a person’s perspective on a given

Gita, thank you. I can’t say I always see eye to eye with staff writers, but I can wholeheartedly say that Kotaku is a better place for having you here and that your efforts make a difference, each and every day. Your perspectives matter and it makes all of us a little smarter, more empathetic, and wiser each read. Tha
