I posted a comment above about how it is pronounced differently (and sounds closer to Aziz/has similar emphasis) in Spanish.

And in Spanish, Isis is pronounced almost like “he SEES” said quickly, which doesn’t sound too far off from Aziz, actually.

Just now watching on Netflix (and TBH I stopped watching and just checked the Wikipedia synopses after this episode), but it would've been a nice parallel to see Jane with 2 equally valid loves, including one after loss, just as Alba found Jorge, especially since Alba was the driver behind so much of Jane's religious

So interesting! I'm literally 39 weeks pregnant and my doctor's office has pictures of the doctors with their families, and a variety of magazines (Essence, Sports Illustrated, Parents, etc.). But only 2 of the ~6 doctors are OBs.

What a beautiful tribute. I’m sure so many of us have similar anecdotes, and research shows that 1) Black teachers have higher expectations, and 2) having a Black teacher makes a student significantly more likely to plan on attending a 4-year college. If it wasn’t already obvious, we matter.

This is hilarious...sending it to my sister.

On top of all the research, I don’t spank my daughter because I’m an educator who spends 8 hours a day with 400 kids and never put hands on them. It seems uniquely fucked up to consciously choose to treat other people's kids better than my own.

I love candy corn! My mom and I like to mix it with salty peanuts. Haters to the left.

I’m a Black woman married to a White man, so obviously I have lots of opinions! I think a lot of these conversations come down to how people view the intersection of the personal and the political, and the extent to which folks can see anti-Blackness reflected in their words and actions*. I consider myself pro-Black

Love this! I breastfed my baby for 14 months (only woman in my family to do so in at least 3 generations)—bookmarking this post for eventual Baby #2!

4Cs of Alameda County has a free referral service we used—they connected us with a ton of options.

I also live in the (East) Bay, and we pay $1500. Personally, we went with a center because the security/consistency of not having to find backup care (no family nearby) has been worth it, among other things.

Yeah, I didn’t even consider Beth dying like the article suggested. I think it’s Annie, because this show loves its twists.

Right on! Current East Oakland educator here. :-)

Yeah, we were engaged for 10 months and saved $600 a month on a public school teacher and lowly public servant salary. We were very lucky with how things worked out.

Your comments are on point. We had a wedding because it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get all of the people closest to us in one room to celebrate our commitment, but we only spent $6K (in the Bay Area, in 2014).

I made a mistake trying to read this and put my kid to bed at the same time. I’m struggling to cry silently.

Me too, and he and I share initials. Birthday triplets!

My upgraded engagement ring stone came from my mom, and she doesn't even remember who gave it to her (either my dad, step-dad, or some guy from high school). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Blasphemy!
