"Are you from Chile?"

"People equate "white" with "American." "

The prior Jez piece has issues, yes. I will pick my battles though. In that case I'm far more offended by a WASPy prep school alumni pretending to be something she's not. Especially since the mainstream media likes to portray Latinos as "gangbangers" & "felons". Jez could have pointed that out, it didn't.

+1 cuz Firefly

"it shows American society only negative aspects of our culture and makes us look like sexist horny peasantry."

What should I call them instead, Constables? Any LEO who violates my rights is a pig, any who doesn't, is not. Simple as that.

And I'm not discounting the rascism and fucked up behavior of the LAPD or other CA police forces, hell I remember the Rampart scandal amongst other horrible shit. But NYPD is another beast all together, they scrape the bottom of the barrel to fill the ranks here. I'm sure the fact that there is a negligible presence

Sorry, but no.

Born and raised New Yorker here.

Erin,

I touched on this in another thread, I will expand my thoughts here. As a Latino male, the reason I'm offended by this is pretty simple. The perpetuation of negative stereotypes about POC, in this case Latinos/Hispanics.

I'm not offended by this per se. I am offended by the idea that our society which has a dominant white social structure might view cholo culture as a representation of Latino/Hispanic culture as a whole, which in itself is pretty amorphous.

Evie, I hear what your saying. Especially when it comes to Latin media. It basically looks like a giant Latifundia, especially the Novelas with the whole "brown maid looking after the affluent white family" shit . I'm brown and my "white" looking cousins, were they to live in the U.S. would be granted white privilege,

Yeah thats right, I butchered the spelling. Her mother grew up in the Upper penninsula of Michigan.

I dated a woman who was mixed race, white & native american (Ogibweh I totally mispelled that, sorry). Everyone thought she was just white.

Yes.

Latino male here. I won't question your ethnic/cultural heritage.

If someone were to refer to me as "Mexican", "Puerto Rican" or "Dominican" I would be offended. Not because I dislike these people (sup y'all), but because that is not my family background. I'm also American, so there is that.

What I used to hear from other brown people.

I can see that being the case in NoCal. The people I'm refering to are most likely not professionals. I would guess they are most likely artists/musicians/grad & doctoral students/graphic designers/fashion industry types etc. They may end up being professionals, but they aren't there yet. Brooklyn is its own little
