Well, given that one of the men involved is an abortion provider who would get sued into oblivion if this law was upheld, that would make things a bit difficult.

Yes, but laws, once on the books, are enforced disparately. We have seen hate crime laws be used in the prosecution of black people for alleged crimes against cops, and for saying things like “white boy” during the commission of a crime where there is a white victim. Are those things hate crimes? Probably not....but

Pretty sure you could put a person who intentionally shot at and hit another person, and nearly killed residents of other homes away for more than 15 year if they really wanted to.  Hate crime enhancements for things like this aren’t necessary.  A desire to prosecute and sentence for harms that are inflicted upon

This is exactly it. Everyone saying “oh she’s a monster b/c she is an assassin.” Everyone already knew that. Why bring up her forced sterilization in the context of discussing how monstrous she is. If her monstrousness is tied to her being a killer, then she should have described a particularly callous killing in that

I mean, what was the whole Angel/Angelus storyline other than punishing her for having sex.  Oh and also Parker.  Oh and also literally having her sex with Riley cause like a demonic vortex.  Oh and also everything with Spike.

I agree with all of this.  I watched Buffy when I was pretty close to the age of the actual character and always viewed it exactly the way you described.  This whole “Buffy as great feminist text” thing was always really confusing to me.

Ehhhhhh......I don’t know about that as a misreading, regardless of what Whedon ultimately said. And if that was the intent that she was trying to convey that the only reason she was a “monster” was b/c she was an assassins, then it was really poorly done.

Where was she in Episode 3?  I can’t even remember.

This may be a weird takeaway from this, and maybe it is just the grief talking, but is it just me, or does the victim’s mother sound awful?

And apparently zero additional words are necessary to explain his “Change” platform.

Again,

I didn’t even need to know the ACTUAL history to know that this had to be the history.  Thank you for sharing this additional context.

Lost in this (irresponsible) narrative is the reality that violence produced more violence, just as it always does. I understand why we have a romantic obsession with taking up arms to defend Black dignity and freedom. But the sad reality is that the history is a very, very clear reminder that violent resistance has

But according to your logic no amount of force that is sufficient to repel brutal force would ever be justified—because you are looking at it based on the outcome. You say “oh yeah, they would have been justified to use force to prevent the holocaust, but we aren’t at holocaust-level violence yet.” But when we get to “

This is interesting to me b/c when I clicked on the headline I didn’t expect it to be about a cultural-based stigma around birth in another country—I expected it to be about the US.

But I’m pretty sure the last folks that got into the Good Place based on the point system was like 1497--so definitely not a product of iPhones and globalization.

“Folks, the times have changed. I don’t think these guys are going to let up,” Biden said, referring to Republicans.

My issue/comment/criticism is not at all about where the discussion landed—which was basically “some folks are cool with it some aren’t, let people decide”—or on the personal opinions expressed.

But both things can be true. Just like the n-word. It is something that is reclaimed—for some—but even for those who are fine using it among themselves (myself included), the fact that it is NOT okay for white people to use it shows that it is still loaded with additional meaning outside of the circle of those who
