A lot of cars these days actually monitor the spare (if it’s full-size and matching) right along with the other four tires. I’ve had a few that were this way.

Front drums are best forgotten, but rear drums are fine and I’m pretty sure you can still get them on certain small cars. If your vehicle has recommended service intervals and you stretch past them, you’re not getting warranty service.
