@Marand: I don't think Windows 7 uses vector based icons, I think they have a bunch of pre-rendered versions at different sizes.
I can't wait for the future with it's crop of inexpensive high PPI (Pixels Per Inch, makes more sense than "Dots Per Inch") OLED monitors *drool*.
Admittedly, Chrome feels more lightweight on my PC (slightly faster page loads, feels more responsive), Firefox 4 has loads more features, especially for machines on Windows Vista/7 with a decent graphics card (Direct2D rendering).
Rather than buy "green" components, it makes more sense to just use stricter Power Saving settings, such as spin-down the hard drive after periods of inactivity, hibernate after 20 minutes of activity, etc.
Don't forget the most beloved "net user" command that 13 year old "h4x0r'5" are so fond of today.
@pantsonfireliarliar: Not really, at least in modernized countries. Canada/America converted their phone systems to a digital based system, vs the old analogue system which made "tone" hacks so prevalent in the 80's and 90's. Now phone's simply use digital connections to verify coin inputs, etc, not tones.
@iliketoeatpie: That's extremely unlikely, unless you really spam click the ads.
If I like the website, I usually go around clicking some ads. It takes like 1 second and you can have about 10 ads opened in tabs. If there are some surveys, I do them, as they often have a nice big payout for the dev if they're completed.
This piece of advice is about as old as time itself, and in no way deserved to be put on Lifehacker.
I can already hear the protests from the "holier-than-thou" lifehacker commenters, who will attest to how "wrong" this is and how it's destroying the financial security of Tom Cruise and his likes.
I find that if I sit a desk, I get more done, though I think it's more because I associate lying on my bed/couch with just relaxing and taking a break, and sitting in a chair at a desk as the place to work.
Wow this is great! Before I was extracting the JPG's, cutting text, etc manually. Great article!
This only works for determining the speed with two directly linked devices/computers(and if you're talking wireless there are other variables that could effect the speed).
@Duane: Have you seen Klingons teeth though...
This is one of the things I hated about VLC (I use both it and Media Player Classic - Home Cinema, which in turn uses FFDSHOW), great tip!
@Theologica: As long as it's not endorsed by the Klingons, then it may still have truth in it yet.
This is one of the few things where Microsoft does the job better. I found OpenOffice and LibreOffice to be very slow to start and use on my laptop, whereas Microsoft Office 2010 runs fine. It also looks much better, and I find it easier to use.
