I’m very much at the “leave good enough alone” state with the classic FFs. I don’t trust S-E to keep the same charm that made them legendary given the way the more recent games have trended.

It’s not shocking at all that they’re sticking with these versions, since that was the height of the franchise in terms of mainstream visibility. Plus the TMNT Arcade / NES TMNT 2 / Turtles in Time era is the height of the franchise’s video game visibility.
I’m guessing that this is still what most people in the world will think of when asked to name an airplane. And I’d bet that status never really goes away.

First thought while reading the first couple of paragraphs was “I bet that’s because of weirdness arising from her status as basically the first important video game mod” and, yup, you hit the same conclusion.
I mean, many of the game’s down points aren’t going to be addressed short of the aforementioned full remaster - the battles are still waaaaaaaaaay too slow even before taking the slowdown into account, with all of those look-it-was-cool-at-the-time PS1-era unnecessary animations.
