Well, $5 is a lot less than paying a PA a yearly salary to write that kind of stuff down for me and then remind me of it later. Besides, If I'm gonna spend money on a CE edition it's not like the $5 is going to hurt me.

I can secure pre-orders in store months before it is available to pre-order on a web site. They call me when they can order it in their system so I don't forget and miss out on the extra crap in the CE editions I like to have.

EA owns the IP and doesn't need the original developers anymore. Pretty much standard EA practice. Same thing happened to Westwood Studios (Command & Conquer).
