It’s all subjective, really.
It’s all subjective, really.
It’s always an echo chamber when you’re around similar-minded individuals. It’s how a poll on Anime News Network can be “61% prefer subs” while I was young enough to grow up with the anime boom in the west and followed the sales of dubs and subs back in the day from various licencors (dubs ALWAYS outsold the subs,…
Yes, we get it. Dubs take work. That’s not what I was discussing (and Chrono Phantasma did have a five month delay... and I don’t recall any hysterical freakout over the decision to take the time to dub it. Hell, Europe still gets the short end of the stick and still has to wait around).
But I don’t understand this. This was never THAT big of an issue with the Blazblue games in the past.
Real otakus prefer subtitles while thinking optional dubs are great for bringing more fans to anime and games.
As disappointing as that was too, Guilty Gear didn’t have a long history with an English dub, nor advertised the latest release as the “conclusion” of a long-wrong narrative story.
I’d counter that, being from Japan, I’ve got to experience a lot of anime and shows from both sides of the ocean, and I think there’s a TON of merit in a well-done dub, especially ones that even outright improve on the originals or have tighter or wittier dialogue or banter.
This was a case of being quite good. Hence why it’s terribly missed.
Why would they be delighted? They ALWAYS had the option to use the Japanese voices. Why would anyone celebrate the loss of an option?
Two different flavors, both good, but I prefer the dub flavor. Especially since they don’t exactly subtitle their in-game battle banter, so that sucks.
This is now a case where I don’t WANT to believe him.
A good dub can just be more palatable to western ears.
They even brought all the game voices to the anime adaptation too.
But... Blazblue WASN’T a bad dub.
Even bilingual, I played with the English dub. They were fantastic. My own observations were that the vast majority played with the English cast.
One of my idiot roommates once had an idiot, racist girlfriend. She got robbed one time and she was hysterical about it at 3 in the morning when the cops came over to get her account. “What did he look like?” “He was black!” “.... Anything else you wish to share?” “What more do you need to know?!”

Shame what happened with Silicon Knights.
“The Rats in the Walls” immediately jumped out to me as well as I descended in the basement cellar.
Twin Snakes is my preferred version of MGS. Even the ridiculous cutscenes fit the ridiculous series, especially in post-Revengeance era.
